Mission and Vision

The SHared Integrated Facility Technology (SHIFT) project will implement one shared facilities Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS) to advance UMD’s ability to create and care for the campus’ physical environment through efficient and effective integration of people, places, processes and technology in order to improve the student experience and deliver exceptional service to the UMD community.

Vision

With technology as a tool, provide responsive and customer-focused facilities services to help UMD achieve it's teaching, research and service mission.

Goals

The goals of the SHIFT project include:

  • Model UMD’s shared values of excellence, collaboration, and inclusion throughout all project phases.
  • Support facilities programs across campus with a single, integrated system.
  • Incorporate industry standards and best practices into university processes to provide effective, efficient, and quality service.
  • Reduce the university's application portfolio to improve usability and data accuracy.
  • Identify strategic opportunities for improvement through analysis of operational data to enable data-driven decision making by operational and leadership staff.
  • Extend the useful life of campus assets through full life cycle management including robust preventative maintenance and early issue identification processes.

Business Practices

The SHIFT project focuses on developing business processes in an effort to improve service to all stakeholders, align resources and investments with the University’s mission and goals, and encourage coordination and collaboration between central and distributed facilities areas. This project will require UMD to evaluate its current business processes and develop new processes.

  • This business development project will support improved, integrated, and expanded services for use by University stakeholders.
  • The process of review and development of business practices will be a collaborative process involving relevant stakeholders, the SHIFT team, and our consulting implementation partner. Business practices will be implemented in a common manner across campus. Extensive opportunities for training will be provided to ensure that all users are properly prepared for these new business processes.
  • The University will adopt “best business practices” that can be configured in the functionality of the new IWMS system (customization is not an option).

Inclusiveness and Transparency

The SHIFT project is a complex and difficult undertaking and will be successful when the University community works in a collaborative and open manner. The project team will create and maintain an environment that is inclusive, open, and provides timely and accurate information on all aspects of the project. Project stakeholders are partners in this project and have an important role in ensuring the success of this engagement.

  • Information about the project will be made available to the University community in a timely, regular, and inclusive manner.
  • Information will be shared using a broad range of communication mediums targeted toward the various stakeholders for the purpose of awareness, education and training, and project progression.
  • Input and feedback for functional needs and business processes will be drawn from a broad representation of university stakeholders.
  • Stakeholders will be represented through cross-functional IWMS project governance.
